The Harvard University Health Services (HUHS) Pharmacy does not purchase, and the HUHS clinics do not use, products from the New England Compounding Center, the lab identified as being responsible for distributing contaminated drugs causing a recent outbreak of fungal meningitis. The HUHS Pharmacy procures all steroid-based pharmaceuticals from established pharmaceutical firms that are regulated by the FDA.
Additional information on this multi-state outbreak can be found on the CDC website, the FDA website, and on the Massachusetts Department of Public Health website.
Patients who have received steroids from an outside provider should contact the prescribing clinician directly to determine the source of the medication. Please contact Dr. Soheyla Gharib, chief of medicine, at 617-495-2001, with any HUHS-related questions.
